The paper is divided in two part in base of the two major reasons that justified the functions of land and sea border control: 1) Economic reason: due to the increasing need to search for new sources of income to cover the increasingly exorbitant costs of the continuous wars in which the Neapolitan state was involved (Paola Avallone part); 2) Sanitarian reason: was closely linked to the health conditions of all the inhabitants of the kingdom, accessible on three sides by the sea, and therefore to be thoroughly controlled to prevent pandemics (Raffaella Salvemini part)
