Abstract

Laminated structures are designed to combine the advantageous characteristics or the materials involved thereby improving the mechanical behavior of the system. Ceramic materials seem to be suitable for tribological applications. An appropriate combination of Al2O3/ZrO2 and ZrO2 layers can generate compressive residual stresses at the surface. The aim of this work is to evaluate whether these stresses can be beneficial for the wear resistance of a structure toughened by symmetrical lamination .
