The demand for accessible and reliable adult screening programs is growing rapidly. Screening can be the first, cost-effective step to initiate a timely and successful hearing care process. Adult screening shall consider the different domains of auditory function (impairment, activity limitation, and participation restriction) as described by the WHO ICF model. Conventional measures of hearing sensitivity (thresholds) may not reflect the lived experience of handicap/disability. Measures of hearing acuity (supra-threshold performance), such as speech understanding in background noise, are needed for adult screening. The most promising available speech in noise methods will be illustrated, and their advantages and limitations will be discussed.

Abstract
The demand for accessible and reliable adult screening programs is growing rapidly. Screening can be the first, cost-effective step to initiate a timely and successful hearing care process. Adult screening shall consider the different domains of auditory function (impairment, activity limitation, and participation restriction) as described by the WHO ICF model. Conventional measures of hearing sensitivity (thresholds) may not reflect the lived experience of handicap/disability. Measures of hearing acuity (supra-threshold performance), such as speech understanding in background noise, are needed for adult screening. The most promising available speech in noise methods will be illustrated, and their advantages and limitations will be discussed.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
