A través del analisis del perfil eclesiástico, evangélico y político de Alessandro Geraldini, primer obispo residente de Santo Domingo, que llegó a su diocesis en 1519, se evidencian los aspectos más significativos y los problemas más apremiantes de la primera evangelización del Nuevo Mundo: el papel del papado y de la monarquía española, los contrastes con los exponentes de la administración real, el impacto cultural y evangélico con los indígenas, el problema de la esclavitud.
