Typing truffle species by morphological markers is often problematic. Molecular approaches can now be employed to differentiate among truffle species with similar morphological features. Coupling molecular markers to the host plant inoculation process has recently allowed scientists to produce mycorrhizae of T.magnatum under controlled condition and describe ex novo their morphology to avoid species mischaracterization. The combination of morphological and molecular analyses is essential to certify plants inoculated with truffle species and promote a successful cultivation of these fungi.
Solo recentemente e grazie all'uso di metodiche proprie della biologia molecolare è stato possibile identificare con certezza le micorrizze del Tuber magnatum e quindi descriverle correttamente. Lo screening molecolare consente, a costi competitivi, di determinare le specie fungine presenti sulle piante micorrizate prodotte per la coltivazione delle specie pregiate di tartufo, aprendo interessanti prospettive per un nuovo approccio alla tartuficoltura.
