Abstract

Building a computer-based instructional system which is endowed with some of the desirable qualities of a human tutor involves not only a knowledge of the subject to be taught but also a knowledge of the teaching and learning processes involved. The use of Artificial Intelligence techniques in the development of tutoring programs permits a theoretical approach to related modelling problems. In this paper we discuss the main characteristics of a good model for an intelligent tutoring system and give some indications of how these characteristics have been realized in a number of existing ICAI programs.
