Many acoustic-wave devices are currently in use to explore sea subbottom, especially in marine geology where a large number of researches aim at obtaining information on the nature and distribution of sediments. In this type of research, two requirements for the acoustic pulse are normally needed, which are often antithetic: high resolution to resolve also small-dimension subsurface anomalies and penetration capability for deeper prospecting. Current available devices, also including the most recent parametric systems, have not both these requirements. Abstract

So, they don,t allow utilization in a wide range of different experimental conditions and environmental situations.1
