The 8th International Conference on Surfaces, Coatíngs and Nanostructured Materials (NANOSMAT) was held at the Granada Congress&Exttibition Centre in the beautiful city of Granada, Spain. This conference was the 8th in the NANOSMAT conference series. NANOSMAT-1 (in 2005) and NANOSMAT-2 (in 2007) were both held in Portugal, whereas, NAN0SMAT-3 (in 2008), NAN0SMAT-4 in (2009), NAN0SMAT-S (2010), NANOSMAT-G (2011) and NANOSMAT-7 (2012) were held in Spain, Italy, France, Poland and Czech Republic, respectively. This year we received around 700 abstracts from authors based in about 50 Countries of the world. The oral talks were conducted in three parallel sessions, whereas, the posters were presented over several poster sessions during the 3 days of the conference, This was the largest, in terms of delegate numbers, NANOSMAT conference held in Europe to date. We are thankful to all our invited speakers for accepting our invitations and offering to share their knowledge with the NANOSMAT delegates. The conference also hosted the highly successful NANOSMAT-Young Scientist Lecture Competition. The 2013 NANOSMAT Prize was awarded to Professor Alexander SeifalÍan from University College London in UK( who also delivered this year's NANOSMAT Lecture. We received 51 paper submissions out of which about half were selected for this special issue. The papers were all peer-reviewed under the responsibility of the following team of Guest Edirors: Jeff Th. M. De Hosson (chair), Nasar Ali, Giuseppe Fierro, Mahmood Aliofkhazraei, Mircea Chipara, with advice from John S. Colligon, special issue Editor of Vacuum. We like to thank all our sponsors for their support in making NANOSMAT-B a great success and, in particular, Elsevier for making this special issue in the journal Vacuum possible for the benefit of the International Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Community. The next NANOSMAT-9 will be held at Trinity College, Dublin, Republic of lreland, during 8-11 September 2014 for what promises to become again an inspirational and memorable conference.
