In 2011 the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) launched a call for proposal to select research projects to be carried out in collaboration between Italian and United States teams, within the framework of the Agreement on Scientific and Technological Cooperation between the Government of the Italian Republic and Government of the United States of America, signed in Rome on April 1st, 1988 emended and extended on October 4th, 1993 and ratified on April 15th, 1994.MAE selected 17 project among more than 400 proposal for granting, and the project "Sviluppo di unaserragonfiabileper la crescitadellepiante, la produzione di cibo e ilsupportoalla vita nellospazio" was one of those selected for funding that took place in 2011 and in 2013. The project was coordinated by the Institute of Agro-environmental biology and forestry of the National Research Council of Italy, and involved the Controlled Environment Agriculture Center (CEAC) of the University of Arizona Tucson, Aero SekurSpA (Italy),Thales Alenia Space - Italia (Italy), and Sadler Machine Co (USA). The general aim of the project was to foster the collaboration among research centers and industries of both countries to increase thetechnical and scientific knowledge necessary for plant cultivation in space as part of bioregenerative life support systems while taking into account the possibility to transfer this knowledge to earth based agricultural systems. Here we will describe the main activities carried out in the project, the results obtained and the future perspectives for collaboration among themembers of the consortium. This work was funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the Italy - USA scientific and technological cooperation agreement.
