Nowadays new generations are incredibly familiar with video games and mobile applications are even more of ordinary use in all generations. These two considerations are the technological pillar on which the idea of using Location Based Games on mobile devices for the valorization and conservation of a protected area, is smartly based. INVOLEN (Intergenerational Learning for Nature Conservation Volunteers) is a project funded by LLP-GRUNDVIG, that targets to nature conservation volunteers, youth and elders in 5 European countries (Italy, Greece, France, Hungary and Slovenia) and aims to promote nature conservation and intergenerational learning through game-based learning. Through an intergenerational learning process, a group of promising nature volunteers, work together in the development of a Location Based Game for mobile devices. INVOLEN i. strengthens the relationship between seniors and teenagers through ICT and nature protection activities , ii. encourages youngsters to become nature protection volunteers, iii. improves the capacity of NGOs to deliver innovative adult education, iv. offers users and tourists and innovative and alternative way to discover a protected area. The Italian pilot group is located in Livorno and focus on the Provincial Park of Monti Livornesi. It is made by 8 students of the secondary school T. Tesei, I.C. Micali, 4 facilitators (WWF staff and teachers), 5 elders volunteers in associations belonging to the local project Occhi sulle Colline and 2 ICT experts. Since April 2013 they have been working together for gathering information through interviews to seniors which know story and tales about the protected area, and for the development of a Location Based Game in ARIS platform for iPhones and iPad which is freely available in the App store. We believe that INVOLEN model and the use of attractive and innovative devices, might be worthy tools for the valorization of nature protection volunteering and for approaching new generations not only to environmental issues but also to nature related tourism.
