The general objective of the research activity is to assess on an annual basis and in different climatic conditions (Florence and Brindisi), both the performance of T. suecica cultures (productivity, macroscopic and microscopic appearance, biochemical composition of the biomass) and the efficiency of sequestration of the CO2 provided for microalgal growth. In particular, the activities carried out by ISE-CNR in the first period of the contract were the following: - Experimental plan definition; - Development of cultivation techniques to grow T. suecica in GWP in both sites (Brindisi and Florence) through the definition of specific protocols for inocula production and productive cultures management; - Technical assistance in the preparation of inocula and management of T. suecica cultures grown in the GWP pilot plant installed in Brindisi during summer and autumn 2012; - Specialized-technical assistance in the management of T. suecica cultures in different types of photobioreactors experimented with in Florence during summer and autumn 2012. However, except for the spring experiments carried out in 2012, no other experimental trials have been conducted at the ENEL pilot plant in Brindisi and therefore all the objectives set out in the contract have been taken forward exclusively in Florence. The activities carried out by ISE-CNR in the 2013 started in early April and ends in the second half of June and were the following: - Realization of the two photobioreactor design: i) "Green Wall Panel" of second generation (GWP-II) and ii) Horizontal Tubular Reactor; - Cultivation of T. suecica in the two photobioreactor designs during Spring 2013: evaluation and comparison of productivity and efficiency of CO2 biofixation; - Comparison of two different modes of CO2 delivery: effect on CO2 biofixation efficiency and on growth performance of T. suecica cultivated in GWP-II.
