The paper reports on the decline of traditional agroforestry systems in Europe, mainly because of the industrialization process and the mechanization of agriculture. Nevertheless, since the last decade, research has proved ecological and economic efficiency of innovative agroforestry systems, especially those aimed to produce high timber production and biomass for energy. It appears necessary a proper political and institutional recognition and support of agroforestry as suitable land use systems in wide rural areas.
