Abstract

The wood support is an essential element of the works of art and is highly sensitive to the environmental climate modification. Wood deformations may have irreversible destructive effects on the work of art. The use of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors for the quasi-distributed in-situ measurement and continuous monitoring of the painted wood panel deformations is proposed. FBG sensors have high resolution low invasivity and intrinsic safety. The results of a set of measurement on a wood panel in different climate conditions are presented. The applicability of fiber Bragg grating sensors to the cultural heritage is demonstrated.
