In this communication we report on results obtained by modifying silica with different kinds of commercial and ad hoc synthesized silanes as well as with grafting of low molecular mass polybutadiene. By using inverse gas chromatography were evaluated the surface characteristics of these modified silicas, leading to previsions about silica-elastomer interaction, fundamental for tye applications. The overall results show that the use of aforementioned surface modifiers is basic in reducing the surface polarity of silica and then to favour its dispersion within the elastomer matrix.

Abstract

In this communication we report on results obtained by modifying silica with different kinds of commercial and ad hoc synthesized silanes as well as with grafting of low molecular mass polybutadiene. By using inverse gas chromatography were evaluated the surface characteristics of these modified silicas, leading to previsions about silica-elastomer interaction, fundamental for tye applications. The overall results show that the use of aforementioned surface modifiers is basic in reducing the surface polarity of silica and then to favour its dispersion within the elastomer matrix.
