Abstract

In this paper, to the aims of management and dam safety, some general criteria to design a telemetering hydro-pluviometric network, integrated into a Geographic Information System (GIS) are defined. The main characteristics of the network and its interaction with a GIS by using hydraulic and hydrological models are evaluated. The use of the integrated system based on the application of GIS and monitoring technique is analyzed in details. Parameters, methodical ones of measure and instrumentation equipment to adopt within the basin subtended from the dam are defined. The modalities of data acquisition and their integration with geographical data in a GIS are described. Flooding area and damages assessment procedures for agricultural land, built-up area can be generated and implemented in the GIS. Finally, an example of design for a telemetering network with a GIS is proposed for some dams located in the Basilicata region, in south of Italy. Copyright © 2014 ASCE.
