The feeding ecology of the European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus L. 1758) in the Mediterranean Sea was investigated in the NW, and no data are available in literature from the central and oriental part. The diel feeding intensity and daily ration were estimated under natural conditions in the Strait of Sicily, during the peak of the spawning period of anchovy. Quantitative analysis of the stomach content showed a diurnal feeding activity with peak at dusk. Results were compared to those reported from other sites of Mediterranean and the Black Sea.
