The paper analyzes the usage of planar inductors on a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) for ElectroMagnetic Interference (EMI) filtering applications. In particular, a method is proposed that allows to efficiently adjust the inductance of a planar inductor and to finely tune an EMI filter. Simulations and experiments are presented, supporting the proposed tuning technique. The method can be advantageously adopted by designers needing to mitigate specific EMI problems at the communication ports of a device without the need of discrete components. For instance, one may easily adjust the parameters of a filter during laboratory testing performed on a prototype, or later on, during compliance verification of the working device. © 2011 EMC Europe.
