Hydro-geological instability is an important problem for Italy due to damage to private properties and public infrastructure and to the considerable loss of life. Therefore it is important that a culture of prevention and prediction arises, based on identification of risk conditions and adoption of measures aimed to minimize environmental impacts. It is not easy to define precursors and thresholds: this is the goal of project "Smart Multichannel Open Standard Data System Platform to Natural Risk Assessment-MODS". MODS is an innovative vigil and pre-alert system for hydrogeological warning; applied for the first time in Apulia, it collects data from weather stations, processing them in order to elaborate maps of territorial rain distribution. MODS is able to manage a huge quantity of data using a spatial datawarehouse and the subsystem of Recording Weather Alert and Relevant Events - ReWARE. The application of MODS allows continuous monitoring of the 94% of the Apulia region.
