In this contribution we present an accurate investigation of an integrated optical polarizer. We evaluate the TM-pass property for an asymmetrical slab with an anisotropic cover. We select a dielectric multilayer cladding (that behaves as negative uniaxial crystal) based on Si and SiO2 with isotropic core. We then analyze the positive case by using: i) as cladding many identical parallel cylindrical bars of small diameter, surrounded by uniform material; ii) as core Gallium Arsenide (GaAs). Subsequently, we validate the model by means of the hybrid TLMIE method and provide design criteria for a rib polarizer with negative uniaxial cover. The proposed polarizer is realized by using a single-mode channel. By utilizing the TM-passing property of the anisotropic cover we select the polarization. © 2006 EuMA.
