We grew self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of a novel carbazolyldiacetylene, CDS9, on Ag-coated glass substrates and demonstrated the topochemical UV polymerisation of CDS9 monolayers by recording the Raman spectra of the organic film before and after UV exposure. We observed coexistence of the blue and red polymeric phases, usually present in polydiacetylenes. The features of the organic/metal interfaces of our samples were properly varied, in order to achieve surface enhancement of the Raman (SERS) response of the ultra-thin molecular layers.

Abstract

We grew self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of a novel carbazolyldiacetylene, CDS9, on Ag-coated glass substrates and demonstrated the topochemical UV polymerisation of CDS9 monolayers by recording the Raman spectra of the organic film before and after UV exposure. We observed coexistence of the blue and red polymeric phases, usually present in polydiacetylenes. The features of the organic/metal interfaces of our samples were properly varied, in order to achieve surface enhancement of the Raman (SERS) response of the ultra-thin molecular layers.
