Abstract

The variation in the high molecular weight (H;\,fW) glutenin subunits in 57 hexaploid wheat accessions from Nepal. collected in ctifferent river valleys and at ctifferent altirudes, was ;rndied. A null allele conctition at the Giu-AI locus far IDvfW glutenin subunits was quite common in ali the populations and reached the 100% frequency in five populations from very high a.ltitudes in three valleys; however no ctirect correlation bèrween altitude and frequency of this allele was found. The 17+18 allele at the Glu-B I locus was very common in most populations. whì1e the 7+8 was present in only two samples collected at very high alticude. Tue 2+ 12 and 5+ 10 allei es Jt the CiuD I locus were uniformly ctistributed in this macerial. Clusters of populations, fonned by utilis:ng Nei ctisL'.lllces, did not show any ;pecific pauem, incticating that human factors might have played a raie eq ual to or greater than the ecological ones.
