The author reviews the volume Giovanni Gentile, Il concetto della storia della filosofia, edited by Piero Di Giovanni, Firenze, 2006. Together with a new edition of Gentile's inaugural lecture on the history of philosophy, delivered at the University of Palermo on January 10, 1907, the book comprises a series of contributions by several Italian scholars dealing with this important essay. The article reconstructs the main argumentation pursued by Gentile and expounds the main critical hints offered by the contributors.
