One of the main problems worldwide is the increased frequency of HABs ( Harmful AIgal Blooms) inc]uding blooms of toxic d inoflagellates, such as several Alexandrium species producing potent neurotoxins (saxitoxins and/or gonyautoxins). Bloom impact on aquaculture may be dramatic, with economic con sequences and risks for human health . Recent toxic bloom of Alexandrium spp (Dinophyceae) , A. minutum and first records of A. catenella, are reported in an Ionian bay of Sicily, the Syracuse harbour, hosting shellfish aquaculture practices .
