An Oasis through time: integrating historical and archaeological sources on Farafra Oasis since Pharaonic period to the present.

In the book on History and excavation of Farafra Oasis (Western Desert, Egypt), focussed on the Site relevance for the Noth African Prehistory, this chapter deals with the Oasis evolution in historical times up to our days. It consists in the comparative study of the Oasis citation in literary texts and the landscape and economic data of the area, tracing back a complex picture of the Oasis through time, up to the modern era explorations. Such a path also stresses the problems and abiguity of geographic definitions as indicating a specific place, at local or regional scale.

Nell'opera monografica sugli scavi e la storia dell'Oasi di Farafra (Egitto, Deserto Occidentale), focalizzata sull'importanza del sito nella preistoria del Nord Africa, il capitolo è relativo all'evoluzione dell'Oasi in epoca storica e fino ai nostri giorni, e realizza uno studio comparato delle testimonianze letterarie e dei dati desunti sull'ambiente e l'economia dell'area, riuscendo a tracciare un quadro complessivo della storia del sito fino alle esplorazioni dell'età moderna. Tale percorso evidenzia anche le difficoltà e le possibili ambiguità nell'individuazione certa di un toponimo associato a una precisa determinazione geografica puntuale o regionale.
