The presentation investigates new planning approaches to a complex and challenging typology of Cultural Heritage: the underground built heritage. Starting from the strategic framework recommanded by the UNESCO, the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL), it gives a definition of Underground built Heritage, a built historic environment which lies at the heart of communities sense of place. Then, it identifies the need for new planning approaches at local level, in order to contribute to individual and collective identity, social cohesion and inclusion. Finally, it pointed out two planning tools, the Strategic Stakeholders' dialogue and the Transition management, and demonstrates their close contiguity.
