National Research Council's libraries of humanities institutes share problems and difficulties because of the eccentricity of their position within the largest Italian research institution. The twodays workshop held on 29th and 30th May 2012 at the Central Library of the National Research Council have voiced this uneasiness and highlighted the need for closer collaboration. The case of (ILIESI) the Institute for European Intellectual Lexicon and History of Ideas's library and its catalog explains these issues. The history of the library reflects the history of the Institute and the events that led to its establishment in 2001. This article describes the bibliographic heritage as result of the merging of libraries belonging to the two Study Centres originating the Institute, and contains the transition from single-user local electronic catalog (BiblioLie) up to the collective catalog online (GECA). This cataloging system allows to see the library's catalog as the main access point to the library collection as well as to the electronic resources available in the various digital archives of the Institute. Future projects of the library concern the recovering in digital format of the microfilm's collection and rare editions, and the adopting of standard systems for the application of digital resources metadata.
