This work summarises the results of a research project funded by Soprintendenza Archeologica per il Lazio and Istituto per le Tecnologie Applicate ai Beni Culturali (CNR) carried out in 1999-2000. The aim of the project was the development of a method for combined the geophysical prospection towards a detailed archaeological interpretation. The selected archaeological site, situated on Altopiani di Arcinazzo (Roma), characterized by the presence of structures related to Traiano's Villa, was carried out using high-resolution GPR surveys. These surveys were carried out over two seasons at Altopiani di Arcinazzo between 1999 and 2000. The known geology of the site and the known archaeology of some excavated structures of the villa suggested that it may be amenable to GPR survey. The purpose of the surveys was initially to test the value of radar in respect of depth of penetration given the general site conditions. The goal was to use Ground-Penetrating Radar and time-slicing techniques along with a range of complementary technologies to provide as complete a picture as possible of part of the complex stratified structures of the villa.
