We have investigated the effect of a combined lateral and longitudinal idle region on the magnetic field dependence of the critical current of both single and vertically stacked Josephson junctions. An excellent agreement has been found with numerical calculations made using a simple model of junction with idle region. The magnetic field response of the single junction after a proper trimming of the idle region has also been analyzed. ©Società Italiana di Fisica.
