Abstract

Which are the social transformations and the "new" population that inhabits the urban peripheries of the Italian cities? This is the question that seems to guide the ethnographic research carried out by Antonelli and Scandurra in "Tranvieri", the boxing gym located in the Bolognina, a working class neighbourhood in the city of Bologna. Two thirds of the gym population are children of immigrants. The narratives and the experiences of the immigrant boxers within and beyond the gym walls become the lens through which the book retraces the rapid changes occurred in Bologna from the beginning of the Eighties due to the closing of factories and the arrival of immigrants, especially from Morocco, Algeria and the other countries of Maghreb.
