Tell el-Maskhuta is an important archaeological site along the Wadi Tumilat. It was the door-lock of a very important route between Egypt and the Levant and an international crossroad. In fact, in ancient times a canal was dug along the wadi to provide a water route between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. An archaeological and historical debate has grown up about Tell el-Maskhuta. It has been identified with the Biblical cities of Pithom or Succoth and the CNR mission is working to solve this enigmatic question. The area of Tell-el Makhuta is 900 m in length and 600 m in width and it is divided by the Ismailiya water channel. Due to the size of the tell and thanks to innovative technologies applied to cultural heritage, the aim of the mission is the integration of technologies in order to document the whole area. Methodological and technological activity, in support to archaeological excavations, consists in satellite analysis, topographical survey, photogrammetric and laser scanner 3D survey, geophysical survey.
