Abstract
There are numerous manufactured structures and objects to be found in the underground in Southern Italy. Representing ways to manage natural resources, to confront the risk of conflict or simply goods and objects stored underground and consequently having survived the test of time, these artifacts allow us to extend our studies of design plans for sustainable growth based on cultural heritage valuation. In fact the underground presents a parallel world, the analysis of which, in its darkness, helps throw light on many of the more obscure areas of Southern Italy urban development, the analysis of the relationship between over-ground and underground urban development reveals many yet-unexplored realities and surprising possibilities of intervention following the roles of "best practice in architecture". According to this approach in fact, the cultural heritage of negative building practice can be used for a contemporary approach to urban regeneration. The paper analyses two ideas of projects based on the valorization of underground space in Southern Italy within two different networks of European and extra-European countries.
