Chitosan of low molecular weight was grafted on cotton gauze by ultraviolet radiations to produce a modified filtering substrate for removal of Cr (VI) metal ions from wastewaters. Different chitosan add-ons (2, 5 and 10 %wt.) were investigated and the surface of modified cotton was characterized by means of SEM and AFM. Batch adsorption tests were carried out under shaking at pH 3 and 20 °C. The experimental results were used to determine the adsorption kinetics order and the best fitting adsorption isotherm model (Langmuir, Freundlich or Dubinin-Radushkevich). A chitosan add-on between 5 and 10 %wt was found as optimal in order to use the majority of free active sites of chitosan on the surface.

Abstract
A chitosan add-on between 5 and 10 %wt was found as optimal in order to use the majority of free active sites of chitosan on the surface.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
