By Sonogashira reaction the branched oligophenylenethynylenes with phenyl, acenaphthenyl or hexynyl groups as the end groups were synthesized. The comparison of model compound and branched polyphenyleneethynylenes clearly shows that their optical properties depend on the presence of phenylacetylene moieties.

Abstract
