All the European elm species are affected by Dutch Elm Disease. A programme for genetic improvement was started in the 1970s, which combined the features of Italian elms with the resistance of Asian species. The selection is also oriented towards structure, leaf shape, growth rapidity and adaptation to the Mediterranean climate. Four clones have been patented: 'San Zanobi', 'Plinio', 'Arno' and 'Fiorente'.
