An expected comeback The Institute for Plant Protection of the National Research Centre in Sesto Fiorentino (Florence) and District 4 of the City of Florence are canying out a research project with the objective of reintroducing the elm in an urban environrnent from which it disappeared because of the Dutch Elm disease caused by fungi Ophiostomn ulmi and 0. novo-ulmi. Disease resistance clones have been reintroduced, some of which have already been patented by the Institute, while others are being experimented to test the adaptability of these "new" plants to the difficult urban environment.
