The book chapter reviews some of the main models aimed at describing electron transport in optoelectronic semiconductor devices. In the first section the hydrodynamic, energy-balance and drift-diffusion models are derived from the Boltzmann transport equation. Then, the second section is focused on quantum transport, and, after reviewing the semiconductor Bloch equations, introduces the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism.

Abstract

The book chapter reviews some of the main models aimed at describing electron transport in optoelectronic semiconductor devices. In the first section the hydrodynamic, energy-balance and drift-diffusion models are derived from the Boltzmann transport equation. Then, the second section is focused on quantum transport, and, after reviewing the semiconductor Bloch equations, introduces the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism.
