The new forms in the production of knowledge of the Millennium are accompanied by increasing research assessment activities. The article deals with different approaches in this field, arguing that assessment tools derived by audit culture, including ISI and bibliometric measures, might be distorsive when applied to research and lead to a worstening instead than to an improvement of the research performance.
