The assessment of groundwater and surficial water pollution requires elaborate analytical approaches to fulfil Quality Standard (SQA) provided for Italian and European guidelines (2013/39/UE, D.M. 56/2009).In this work we contemplated applying an automated SPE extraction method to high volumes (5 L) of surficial water to detect some of the most widespread herbicides and metabolites. The suggested method allows to satisfy the lowest standards for 9 herbicides and 3 metabolites as required by guidelines; it means that the limit of quantification (LOQ) has to be less than 30% of SQA and expanded uncertainty less than 50% of SQA. Recoveries are suitable for 10 compounds out of 12. Surficial samples collected from lake and rivers were extracted together with particulate without any previous treatment by means of an automated system of filtration and extraction.
