The italian province of Ferrara, until 1861 at the northerner side of the Papal State, was characterized by huge swamps, that were steam-drained only at the end of 19th century. Since 16th century a strong proletarianization has been changing the rural landscape. At the end of 19th century Ferrara, with its thousands of casual rural labourers looking for work, was deep troubled by strikes and organization. In 20th century it was the birthplace of fascist rural squads. I'd like to compare some local cases about the growth of rural landless households through 18th and 19th centuries: was this development due to downward social mobility, to in-migration from other villages or provinces, or to specific demographic attitudes?

Abstract
The italian province of Ferrara, until 1861 at the northerner side of the Papal State, was characterized by huge swamps, that were steam-drained only at the end of 19th century. Since 16th century a strong proletarianization has been changing the rural landscape. At the end of 19th century Ferrara, with its thousands of casual rural labourers looking for work, was deep troubled by strikes and organization. In 20th century it was the birthplace of fascist rural squads. I'd like to compare some local cases about the growth of rural landless households through 18th and 19th centuries: was this development due to downward social mobility, to in-migration from other villages or provinces, or to specific demographic attitudes?I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
