La dea 'sfuggente'. (Ancora) Su Demetra in Sardegna alla luce di alcune ricerche recenti

Th e following notes are devoted to a topic which has progressively acquired a central position in the framework of the studies dedicated to the history of Sardinia, especially for what concerns the phases included between the 4th and the 1st century BC: we refer to the (possible) role played by the worship of the Greek goddess Demeter in the island. It was not so long ago, in fact, that some aspects of the devotional expressions attested in the rural territories (and in the urban centres as well) aft er the end of the 5th century, specifi cally of those interpreted as related to the agrarian and fertility dimension, were ascribed to the personality and the mythology of that deity. For some time, however, the nature of Demeter's cult, or even its real existence in Sardinia, has been seriously put in question. Following some recent investigations, which have faced the topic again, it could be useful, then, to retrace the main questions and to propose some considerations.

Le seguenti note sono dedicate a un tema che ha progressivamente acquisito una posizione centrale nel quadro degli studi dedicati alla storia di Sardegna, in particolare in relazione al periodo che va dal IV al I sec. a.C. Mi riferisco al (possibile) ruolo ricoperto nell'isola dal culto della dea greca Demetra; fi no a non molti anni fa, infatti, certi aspetti delle forme devozionali documentate nei territori rurali (e così nei centri urbani) dopo la fi ne del V secolo, specialmente quelli interpretabili come connessi alla dimensione agraria e fertilistica, erano sovente attribuiti alla personalità e alla mitologia della dea. Da qualche tempo, tuttavia, la natura del culto di Demetra, o anche la sua stessa esistenza in Sardegna, sono stati messi seriamente in discussione. Alla luce di alcune indagini recenti, che hanno nuovamente affrontato l'argomento, sarà dunque utile ripercorrere i termini principali del problema così da suggerire linee di lettura.
