In Italy the major cities have been undergoing territorial and administrative reorganization, following approval of Law 56/2014, establishing the Metropolitan City as the governing authority of metropolitan areas. According to the Law, one of the main task of Italian Metropolitan Cities is to promote and manage infrastructures, especially transport ones. Within the current programming period 2014-2020 of European funds related to European Strategy "Europe 2020", metropolitan cities are considered "key" territories to promote a "smart, sustainable and inclusive growth" (EC, 2010). One of the main asset to implement the EU Strategy is the promotion of sustainable mobility in urban areas. During the last ten years the European Community has been developing more and more strategic documents and initiatives aimed at stimulating local authorities to define integrated policies in the transport sector and implement measures to improve quality of life in urban areas. At the same time many urban development processes have taken on board the paradigm of the Smart City, which is emerging strongly in the European context. Such paradigm has been contributing to spread of a new urban mobility model based on the use of ICTs to reach sustainability targets as the GHG emissions reduction. Indeed, many cities are implementing several initiatives in the Smart Mobility sector that is more suitable than other investment field to the broadcasting of new technologies. In this context, the paper aims at evaluating whether and how the Smart City paradigm is contributing to improve the efficiency, the sustainability and the liveability of 12 Italian Metropolitan Cities, by focusing on mobility sector. In particular, through a set of parameters selected from some of the main Italian databases (i.e. ISTAT, ISPRA) and the collection the smart initiatives related to the mobility sector, this work measures the gap between the Italian cities by comparing their strategies and measures, also relating them to the current European funding programmes. The expected results can be summarized as follows: (i) an analysis of the adoption of the Smart Mobility concept within Italian cities; (ii) an evaluation the Smart Mobility policies efficiency by the comparison of parameters and initiatives; (iii) the comparison of Italian Metropolitan Cities with the best European cities in the mobility policies referring to sustainable mobility targets (i.e., reduction of road congestion, improvement of road safety). The paper is divided into four parts: the first provides a review of the scientific literature about the relation between Smart Mobility and sustainable mobility; the second describes the Smart Mobility policies and initiatives developed in the 12 Italian Metropolitan Cities; the third explains the research methods adopted in the study; the fourth illustrates the main results; finally, the last section provides some causes of reflections about the efforts that the Italian cities need to carry out in order to fulfill policies as the top European cities in mobility sector
