Abstract

The European Union launch the WFD2000/60/EC which defines the general principles and objectives for Community action in the field of water. Water is here viewed as a heritage to be protected and preserved. An innovative element is the new concept of monitoring and control. The ecological assessment of water bodies is based on biological elements (EQB). Hydromorphology and physical-chemical parameters influence the classification only through their effects on the biotic communities. The evaluation is based on the comparison with EQB communities of sites where human impacts are scarce or absent (references ites). Thus, the definition of reference conditions for each EQB of each lake type is needed.
