Texture image retrieval and classification tasks are conducted widely in computer vision but few stud- ies have considered the same problem for decorations and textures applied to surfaces. Thus, in order to address this problem, we propose an algorithm for retrieving and classifying color patterns over sur- face meshes. In this study, we explored the capability of edgeLBP descriptors for retrieving and clas- sifying color patterns over surface tessellations. Our experimental results demonstrated that these de- scriptors performed well at pattern retrieval, including for patterns on degraded and corrupted archeo- logical fragments. We compared the performance of the edgeLBP descriptors with a recent benchmark and conducted an extended analysis of the robustness of this technique to mesh remeshing and surface decimation.
