The paper will explore the development and the evolution of the EU citizenship in connection with the European federalising process. After pointing out the meaning, the characteristics and the implications of the concept of citizenship in the European context (that is to say, the EU citizenship and its relationship with national citizenships), I will focus on the debate, the possible remedies, the solution proposed by scholars and Institutions. Particular attention will be given to the case law of the European Court of Justice, which is considered the engine of the EU integration process.
