Abstract

My contribution to these important days for the future of terraced landscapes, is not (and can not be) a technical contribution as those qualified we have followed with great attention, but wants to be a historical reflection on a general character of Liguria (Italy), small but complex region, with the intention of offering a frame element and the connection with the emerged problems. Basically, we want to draw attention to the fragmentation of specialist knowledge and the consequences of its application that does not take into account, as a soloist in perspective, the system of interconnections that bind the parties to the environment in which men live and work and created terraced landscapes, making them a cultural and technical products, which over time has supported sides and finally, acquired historic dignity. The transformations of land use, construction of terraced landscapes as well as the alternation of crops and ultimately the repeated abandonment of man-made work of terracing, have determined a harmful impact on the involved territories. This means that the necessary attention to the artifacts lacked for a long time, and it was not be seen a cornerstone in the policy guidance of the territory. However, its complete knowledge, not only scientific but above all cultural and historical, would be the only possible way to govern from the source - from the slopes to the coast - water resources. A concern that would have to be educated, to a healthy constructed of land management. Therefore, in developing a few moments of the history of the ligurian "fasce" - as they are called in the local parlance - the aim of these pages is based on the need to see the problems from a broader and unifying perspective. The starting point may be to a better understanding of the history, the specific situations and correlations, which are essential for the recovery of the terraced landscape; a choice and especially a resource, perhaps not still learned, for the future of this "stone world" and its inhabitants.
