A quantitative evaluation of the optic disc ischemia

The paper describes a method based on numeric techniques far image processing that can be used to determine the degree of the retinal ischemia. On the digital images obtained from fundus fluorescein angiography two regions of interest are selected and processed to obtain the ratio of photometric values of the two sets of pixels; this numerical ratio is used as an index of the disease. The semiautomatic method has been compared witb visual interpretation of fluorangiograms and a good agreement has been found. The described procedure has been developed on a general purpose processor and can be implemented on dedicated systems for digital fluorescein angiography.

Il lavoro descrive un metodo basato su tecniche di analisi numerica di immagini per la determinazione del livello di ischemia retinica. Sulle immagini digitali ricavabili dagli esami fluorangiografici del fondo oculare, vengono individuate delle regioni di interesse che vengono elaborate per determinare un valore di confronto fotometrico che è in grado di caratterizzare la gravità della patologia studiata. Il metodo è stato confrontato con l'interpretazione clinica visiva del fluorangiogramma, ricavando un buon accordo tra le due valutazioni. La procedura elaborativa può essere sviluppata sia su elaboratori general purpose, sia su un sistema dedicato per la fluorangiografia digitale.
