Global frameworks and conventions stated the relation between heritage protection and the health of citizens, and the fundamental right to heritage for every human being. The bases of a real paradigm shift in the way the society will experience monuments and sites in the near future can be formulated as follows: Open Heritage - Open Technology - Open Laboratory - Open Data. Four pillars to build an innovative and sustainable approach to safeguard and to use of the heritage. The ACHELOIS project turns these concepts into practice, supports the knowledge transfer, and engages the local community in participative processes, addressing the building of an open cultural ecosystem. The project implements four actions according to the four pillars OH - OT - OL - OD, whose principal aspects are Openness, Inclusiveness and Sustainability. Expected outcomes are: definition of easier procedures supporting the free knowledge integration; spread of an innovative model of research infrastructure; implementation of ICT tools for helping decision makers in preventive conservation; definition of guidelines and operative procedures to transfer to stakeholders; engagement of local communities to overcome economic and educational barriers. The project contributes to Topic 1 by analysing the impact of the new trends in technological innovation to manage risks, and structuring an overall approach based on the Open Access (OA). It also addresses Topic 2 by working at new knowledge integration, low-cost open technologies, and considering the public engagement of local communities according to the vision of the Faro Convention. Guidelines and good practices, helping stakeholders and local administrators to extend these actions to other heritage sites and landscapes.
