Located in the heart of the Roman Castles area, approximately 30 km southeast of Rome, the archaeological park of Tusculum is property of the "XI Comunità Montana dei Castelli Romani e Prenestini", which has bought the whole area in 1984 in order to protect and valorize it. Since 1994, the Spanish School of History and Archaeology in Rome-CSIC leads an interdisciplinary archaeological research project in Tusculum, in collaboration with several Italian and Spanish universities and research centers. In 2017, the Institute of Conservation and Valorization of Cultural Heritage of Italian National Research Council has joined the Tusculum Project, with two main goals: to plan and carry out diagnostic activities on decorated materials discovered in order to plan their conservative restoration; and to develop best practices for the valorization of this relevant archaeological area, also including it in international projects of enhancement and promotion of tourism in disadvantaged and minor cultural site
