In this contribution the methodological approach developed to improve the knowledge, conservation and monitoring of the buildings at the archaeological site of Hierapolis is shown. The criteria adopted to select the different buildings, the sampling strategy and the monitoring protocol are described and discussed. During the Marmora Phrygiae Project a complete study of materials and their state of conservation, and a monitoring activity of archaeological surfaces and environmental parameters were realized with a multi-analytical and multidisciplinary approach. The study of relationships between materials and environmental conditions, and the identification of the main decay phenomena and causes were the principal goals of this research.
