Quality assurance and control in radiology using an image processing approach

As part of a special project of the Italian National Research Council (CNR), the "Progetto Finalizzato Tecnologie Biomediche e Sanitarie", the authors have designed and tested the operating center of "Istituto di Elaborazione dell'Informazione", C.N.R., Pisa. The main objective has been to implement a hardware-software integrated system (SIRAD) for the acquisition and processing of standard radiological images in quality assurance and control in diagnostic radiology and radiotherapy. In this paper the image processing system and some of the most important results obtained using the computing system are briefly described.
